Short Biography

Thomas Götzelmann is a PhD candidate and lecturer at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. This is where he also completed his BA degree in Linguistics and Social and Cultural Anthropology (2016) as well as his MA degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology (2019). Thomas’ research topics revolve around the state, law and bureaucracy, digitalisation, and affect, emotions, and sentiments.

Thomas’ current fieldwork is located in Germany’s federal migration bureaucracy and has started in 2020. Thomas investigates the social and emotional-affective dynamics of bureaucrats regarding ongoing processes of administrative digitalisation.

For his MA research project, he researched sentiments of justice in Cameroon’s “Anglophone Crisis” by accompanying anglophone common law lawyers through the everyday of striking and/or working in a developing civil war.
